Background of the Study :
Homework has long been a cornerstone of the educational process, designed to reinforce classroom learning and foster independent study habits among students. In secondary schools in Dutse LGA, Jigawa State, the influence of homework on students’ study habits is particularly significant. Homework assignments serve not only as a tool for reviewing material covered in class but also as a means to develop critical thinking, time management, and self-discipline. Recent educational research emphasizes the positive correlation between well-structured homework and improved academic performance (Bello, 2023). In this region, where classroom instruction may be limited by various factors, homework becomes a critical extension of the learning process, providing students with an opportunity to engage with the material at their own pace.

The design, quantity, and quality of homework are essential factors that determine its effectiveness in fostering good study habits. In Dutse LGA, teachers have implemented diverse homework practices aimed at reinforcing concepts taught in class and encouraging continuous learning. However, there is growing concern regarding the potential negative impacts of excessive homework, which may lead to burnout and reduced motivation among students. Studies conducted in similar contexts suggest that while moderate homework can enhance study habits, an overload may have adverse effects on students’ overall well-being and academic enthusiasm (Bello, 2023; Musa, 2024). This study aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of how homework influences the study habits of secondary school students in Dutse LGA. It will explore the balance between quantity and quality of homework, investigate student and teacher perceptions, and assess the overall impact on academic performance. By analyzing these factors, the research intends to generate insights that can inform future educational strategies, ensuring that homework serves as an effective tool for enhancing students’ study habits rather than a source of undue stress.

Statement of the Problem :
Despite the recognized benefits of homework, there is an ongoing debate about its optimal role in enhancing students’ study habits in secondary schools in Dutse LGA, Jigawa State. Many educators and parents have expressed concerns that the current homework practices may be overwhelming for students, potentially leading to a decline in effective study habits and overall academic performance. The core problem lies in finding the right balance between assigning homework that reinforces classroom learning and avoiding an excessive workload that may lead to student burnout (Musa, 2024). In some cases, students report that excessive homework interferes with their ability to engage in extracurricular activities and obtain adequate rest, which are also vital for holistic development.

Additionally, the variability in the type and amount of homework assigned across different schools in Dutse LGA suggests that there may be a lack of standardized guidelines, leading to inconsistent impacts on study habits. The absence of a well-regulated homework policy has made it challenging to assess its true influence on academic performance and study behavior. This inconsistency is further exacerbated by disparities in home environments, where not all students have equal access to the resources and parental support needed to complete homework effectively. As a result, the potential benefits of homework in reinforcing study habits may be undermined by factors such as stress, fatigue, and a lack of engagement.

Therefore, it is imperative to investigate how homework assignments are influencing the study habits of secondary school students in Dutse LGA, with a focus on understanding the optimal workload and the contextual factors that either enhance or impede effective study practices. This research will address these issues, providing recommendations to balance homework assignments in a manner that maximizes their positive impact on student learning (Bello, 2023; Musa, 2024).

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Homework positively influences the development of effective study habits.

  2. There is a significant correlation between the quality of homework and improved academic performance.

  3. Structured homework assignments lead to better study habits among students.

Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it explores the critical role of homework in shaping students’ study habits in secondary schools. By examining the balance between homework quantity and quality, the research offers practical recommendations for teachers and school administrators to optimize homework practices. Improved homework strategies can enhance students’ academic performance, foster independent learning, and reduce stress. The findings will contribute to evidence-based policies aimed at creating a more effective and balanced approach to homework in the educational system.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the influence of homework on students' study habits in secondary schools in Dutse LGA, Jigawa State. It focuses on the relationship between homework practices and study habits, excluding factors outside the academic domain.
